How to convert PNG to GIF

Why you might still need a GIF
GIF is decades old, yet some forums, legacy content systems, email templates, signature tools and older software still list it as the accepted image type. If a platform rejects your PNG but takes GIF, this conversion gives you a compatible file. It works best for simple graphics such as badges, buttons, small logos and diagrams with a limited set of flat colors.
Limits of the GIF format
A GIF can hold at most 256 colors. Flat artwork usually fits comfortably, but photographs and smooth gradients get reduced to that palette, which can cause visible banding. GIF output here does not keep partial transparency: transparent areas are filled with the background color you pick, white by default, so choose one that matches where the image will appear. Metadata is not copied.
This makes a still image, not an animation
ConvitAll exports a single-frame GIF. It does not combine several PNGs into an animation, and animated sources also become one frame. For animated content, a dedicated GIF maker is the right tool.
Size tips
For simple graphics, a GIF can be quite small. For photo-like images it is often both larger and worse-looking than a JPG, so use GIF only when it is required. Reducing the longest side under Image size is the main way to make a GIF lighter, since the format has no quality slider.

Windows Paint can save a still GIF through File > Save as and may warn that colors will be reduced. On a Mac, holding Option while opening the Format menu in Preview's Export dialog reveals additional formats on many macOS versions, which typically include GIF. Questions and answers
Can I make an animated GIF from several PNG files?
No. ConvitAll creates one still GIF per PNG and does not assemble frames into animation. If you add 10 PNGs you get 10 separate still GIFs. Use a dedicated animation tool when you need motion.
Why does my GIF look grainy or banded?
GIF is limited to 256 colors. Photos, shadows and smooth gradients contain far more, so they are reduced to the nearest available colors, which shows as bands or grain. For photographs, JPG or WebP will look much better.
Is transparency kept when converting PNG to GIF?
No. GIF output here is a fully opaque image. Transparent and semi-transparent areas of the PNG are filled with your chosen background color. Pick the color of the page or email background so the edges blend in.
Is a GIF smaller than a PNG?
For very simple graphics with few colors, it can be similar or smaller. For detailed images it is often larger and lower in quality. GIF is mainly about compatibility with systems that require it, not about saving space.
