What an ICO file is used for
ICO is the icon format Windows uses for shortcuts and folders, and the classic format for website favicons, the small image shown in browser tabs and bookmarks. Many sites still place a favicon.ico file at the root of the domain because browsers look for it there automatically. Converting a PNG logo to ICO is the quickest way to produce one.
What ConvitAll creates
The output is an ICO containing a single PNG-compressed image up to 256 pixels on its longest side, with transparency kept. Windows since Vista and current browsers read this kind of icon. It is not a multi-resolution bundle containing separate 16, 32 and 48-pixel versions; the system scales the one image as needed. Larger PNGs are scaled down to fit 256 pixels, and smaller ones are not enlarged.
Preparing the PNG for a crisp icon
Start with a square PNG at least 256 × 256 pixels with a transparent background. A non-square image keeps its proportions, so it will not fill the icon square. Icons are tiny, so simplify: thick shapes, high contrast and one or two letters read better than a full logo with fine text. If you want a smaller file, choose Custom longest side and enter a value such as 48 or 32.
Making an ICO without a converter
Neither Windows Paint nor the Photos app saves ICO files. On a Mac, Preview's Export dialog shows extra formats on some macOS versions when you hold the Option key while opening the Format menu, and an icon format may be listed; availability varies. A converter is usually simpler.
Using the icon on your website
Upload the downloaded file to the root of your site as favicon.ico, or reference it in your page head with a link tag whose rel value is icon. Browsers cache favicons aggressively, so a hard refresh or a new tab may be needed to see a change. ConvitAll builds the ICO in your browser without sending your logo anywhere.
Questions and answers
What size should my PNG be for a favicon?
Use a square PNG of at least 256 × 256 pixels with a transparent background. ConvitAll scales it down to fit within 256 pixels and never enlarges smaller images. A clean, bold design stays recognizable when the browser shows it at 16 or 32 pixels.
Does the ICO include 16, 32 and 48-pixel sizes?
No. The file holds one PNG-compressed image up to 256 pixels. Modern browsers and Windows scale it for smaller displays. If a legacy system specifically needs several embedded sizes, you will need a dedicated icon editor.
Will the transparent background stay transparent in the ICO?
Yes. ICO output keeps the alpha channel from your PNG, so the icon sits cleanly on light and dark browser tabs and desktop wallpapers. There is no background color to choose for this format.
Can I make a favicon from a JPG instead of a PNG?
Yes, the converter accepts JPG and other formats as input for ICO. A JPG has no transparency, though, so the icon will be a solid square. For a shaped icon, start from a PNG or SVG with a transparent background.
