How to convert HEIC to PNG

  1. Choose your files. Add HEIC images. You can select up to 20 files per batch, within the displayed size limits.
  2. Set the result. PNG is already selected. Adjust dimensions and, for JPG, WebP or AVIF, quality. Check the transparency background where available.
  3. Convert and download. Download each result or the batch ZIP. Compare file size and appearance before replacing any original.

PNG output: Lossless & transparent. Transparency can be preserved when the source contains it.

When PNG is the better target than JPG

Pick PNG when the receiving program specifically asks for it, or when the photo is headed into an editing workflow where you will save it several more times. PNG stores the decoded pixels exactly, so repeated saves never add new compression artifacts. Designers often use it for mockups, collages and cut-outs that will be layered in another app.

For plain sharing, emailing or a JPEG-only upload form, the HEIC to JPG page is usually the more practical choice because the files come out far smaller.

File size: plan for a much larger PNG

HEIC is a highly compressed format, while PNG is lossless. A full-resolution 12-megapixel iPhone photo saved as PNG commonly lands well above 10 MB, several times the size of the HEIC it came from. PNG also has no quality slider to trade detail for size.

The easiest way to keep PNG files manageable is to reduce their dimensions. Choosing Fit within 1,920 px or 1,280 px under Image size cuts the pixel count dramatically, and the file shrinks with it.

What does not transfer from the HEIC

The PNG holds only the main still image. Live Photo motion, depth data, extra frames, HDR highlights and EXIF fields such as GPS, capture time and camera settings are left out. Photos shot on an iPhone have no transparent areas, so the PNG will be fully opaque. Colors from a wide-gamut or HDR display can look slightly flatter after conversion.

Converting HEIC to PNG on a Mac or PC without a website

On macOS, open the photo in Preview, choose File > Export and set Format to PNG. Finder can also batch-convert selected photos through Quick Actions > Convert Image, where PNG is one of the choices. On Windows 11, install the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, open the photo in Paint and use File > Save as > PNG picture. Exact menus differ between versions.

How ConvitAll converts it

A HEIC decoder runs inside your browser tab, draws the photo onto a canvas on your device and exports a PNG. No photo data is sent to a server, there is no sign-up and the result carries no watermark. Download each PNG separately or the whole batch as a ZIP.

Before converting your HEIC photo

Should I choose PNG or JPG?

PNG avoids another lossy encoding step after the HEIC is decoded, but it often makes a larger file. It does not recover missing detail. Use HEIC to JPG for JPEG-only destinations.

Are Live Photos and camera metadata preserved?

No. This converts the primary still image. Live Photo video, extra images, GPS, camera metadata and HDR information are not carried over. Keep your original HEIC if you need these features.

Why will my photo not open?

Select the actual downloaded HEIC or HEIF file, rather than a cloud placeholder. Try one photo at a time and close other memory-heavy tabs. Some HEIC variants may not decode; changing the output format cannot repair an unreadable source.

Can I convert several iPhone photos privately?

Yes. Add up to 20 files within the displayed limits and download individual results or a ZIP. File contents stay on your device. The first HEIC conversion loads a local decoder and may take longer. Read the iPhone photo conversion guide.

Questions and answers

Is HEIC to PNG lossless?

The PNG step is lossless: it saves exactly the pixels decoded from your HEIC without adding new compression. It cannot restore detail that HEIC compression already removed when the iPhone captured the photo, and HDR or camera metadata is not carried over.

Why is my PNG ten times bigger than the HEIC?

HEIC uses modern lossy compression designed to keep photos small, while PNG keeps every pixel value exactly. Photographs have lots of fine variation, which PNG cannot compress efficiently. Reduce the longest side, or choose JPG or WebP output, if size matters.

Can I get a transparent background from an iPhone photo?

Not with a straight conversion. A regular photo has no transparent pixels, so the PNG stays fully opaque. Removing a background needs a separate editing tool; once you have a cut-out image, PNG is a good format to save it in.

Does HEIC to PNG work on Windows and Chromebooks?

Yes. The converter runs in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, and it brings its own HEIC decoder, so Windows does not need the HEIF extension and a Chromebook needs no extra app. Very large batches depend on available device memory.
