How to convert AVIF to PNG

  1. Choose your files. Add AVIF images. You can select up to 20 files per batch, within the displayed size limits.
  2. Set the result. PNG is already selected. Adjust dimensions and, for JPG, WebP or AVIF, quality. Check the transparency background where available.
  3. Convert and download. Download each result or the batch ZIP. Compare file size and appearance before replacing any original.

PNG output: Lossless & transparent. Transparency can be preserved when the source contains it.

Good reasons to convert AVIF to PNG

Choose PNG when the AVIF is a graphic with transparent areas, when an editor or design tool needs a format it can open reliably, or when you want a lossless working copy that will not degrade if you save it several times. Product cut-outs, logos and illustrations saved from websites as AVIF are typical examples.

If you only need a photo to open somewhere, AVIF to JPG is usually the lighter option.

Transparency, HDR and metadata

AVIF supports an alpha channel and so does PNG, so transparent backgrounds carry straight across. HDR and wide color gamut information are not preserved: the PNG is a standard image, and very bright or saturated areas can look a little more muted. Animated AVIF files are reduced to one frame, and EXIF or other source metadata is not copied.

PNG files from AVIF can be large

AVIF squeezes images hard; PNG does not compress lossily at all. Converting a photographic AVIF to PNG can produce a file many times larger than the source, so do not be surprised by a big jump. For graphics with flat areas of color the increase is smaller. To bring a PNG down, set a smaller longest side under Image size before converting.

Doing it on your computer

On a Mac running a recent macOS, Preview can open AVIF; choose File > Export and set Format to PNG. Windows 11 usually needs the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store before AVIF files open in built-in apps, and from there Paint can save a PNG if it reads the file. Version differences are common.

ConvitAll AVIF to PNG in practice

Add AVIF files, keep PNG selected and press convert. The browser decodes each image, with a local fallback decoder for browsers that lack AVIF support. You can convert up to 20 files per batch and download them together as a ZIP. The work happens on your device and no copy is kept by us.

Questions and answers

Does AVIF to PNG keep a transparent background?

Yes. When the AVIF contains transparent or partly transparent pixels, the PNG keeps them. You do not need to pick a background color for this pair; that setting only applies to formats without transparency, such as JPG.

Will the PNG look exactly like the AVIF?

For most standard images it looks the same. AVIF files with HDR or wide-gamut color are converted to a standard color range, so highlights and saturated colors may look slightly muted compared with an HDR display.

Should I use PNG or JPG for a converted AVIF photo?

Use JPG for photos you want to share or upload, because it stays far smaller. Choose PNG when you need transparency, a lossless editing copy or a tool that only accepts PNG. The AVIF to JPG converter sits one click away in the converter list.

Can I convert AVIF to PNG on a phone?

Yes, in a current mobile browser. Large photos need more memory, so on an older phone try a few files at a time or pick a smaller longest side. The files are processed on the phone itself and are not uploaded.
